Grand Teton Mountains Trip
2000

In honor of our 30th Anniversary we returned once again to the Grand Teton National Park, this time taking our youngest son (now 15) and our 7 year old granddaughter, Catherine. It was Catherine's first backpacking trip, but like the other kids, she embraced the forest with an enthusiasm born of a love for adventure.

trailhead

Gathering at the trailhead we could see that this would be an easy hike along the string of lakes then around to the backside of Leigh Lake to a campsite on a jutting peninsula.

picking blueberries along the trail

Along the trail we found the forest thick with wild blueberries, ripe and ready to eat. Of course we also enjoyed blueberry pancakes each morning.

looking across the lake towards our honeymoon campsite      looking towards Mt. Moran

From our campsite on the peninsula we could look east across the lake to the site where we spent our honeymoon in 1970 and on the other side we could look west towards the majestic Mount Moran.

the tent was cozy      the food was good

The tent was cozy, the food was good....

Mike and Matt...the mighty fishermen      Matt's first trout

The guys said the fishing was great. Matt caught his first trout, and it was a big one!

mama bear      baby bears scampered up a tree when mama signaled

A mama bear and her two cubs paid us a little visit the first afternoon. They were scoping out the campsite to see if we would be easy pickin's. When they found we were not going to let them take our food off they ran...... thank goodness!

the summer of 200 was so dry that forest fires were common all over the western states

To add to the adventure, lightning started a forest fire across the lake to the Northwest. We were fortunate, a light rain the next day put it out. The dry summer caused such a fire hazard that camp fires were not permitted anywhere in the park and all cooking had to be done on gas camp stoves.

"Grammy" and Catherine      hiking back

And so we hiked back....the end of a grand adventure and sweet memories of a lifetime.
