Rocky Mountains Trip
2001

In July of 2001 we all decided it was now time for our Grandson Sam, to take his first backpack trip. We gathered together daughter Kristy, son-in-law Gil, grand-daughter Catherine and 3 year old Sam, along with Me, Mike and our son Matt now 16, and headed for the rugged, but magnificent Rocky Mountain National Park west of Boulder, Colorado.

The snow-mantled peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park rise above lush valleys, twisting rivers, and glistening lakes. One-third of the park is above tree line, where tundra predominates, but needless to say, on this trip we did not venture that far up.

Mike is missing from the obligatory trail head photo. He was designated photographer as there were no other visitors nearby to help out. We were headed up the Fern Lake Trail.

We hiked on gentle slopes, through lodgepole pine and Douglas Fir. Openings in the forest produced summer wildflower gardens of rare beauty...........

... finally reaching our destination, "Forest Inn" campsite. Keeping a watchful eye on the approaching rain storm, we wasted no time in setting up camp.

the summer of 200 was so dry that forest fires were common all over the western states

Soon our little "village" was erected and was home for 3 lovely days. We had 3 tents, a tarp-covered "kitchen" area (safe guard against the frequent little rain showers), and various scattered hammocks and logs and rocks to sit on.

And so we hiked back.... on a glorious Sunday morning. The almost mystical look of the sun breaking through the fog-shrouded forest seemed to remind us of God's glory and the sweetness of this wonderful gift of the wilderness He has provided for our pleasure. We treaded softly and left nothing behind save our footsteps on the well-worn path. But we carried away with us these photos and memories of a grand adventure.
