All our children began
camping at an early age and I think it has helped to give
them not only an adventurous spirit, but a real sense of
independence and confidence.
At 2 years old on a backwoods trip in the Smokey Mountains
our son felt very important gathering kindling for the campfire.
Notice the whistle around his neck....he could blow it if
he ever got separated from us and we would be able to hear
it a long way off....he always said it was for "scaring
off bears" :) .
He needed a little help from Dad up the steep parts of the
trail....and I remember carrying him the last mile as it
was past his nap time....but he proudly carried his own
tiny pack holding his treasures and "blanky".
At age 3 he was ready for a longer trip....so we headed
for our favorite spot in the Tetons. We stuck to the lower
lakes area and the ridge meadows where the walking was easier.
He found the dandelions, which he called "blow flowers"
were a lot of fun. We also had to stop and inspect every
bug we saw.
Helping Dad catch a fish for dinner was a lot of fun too.
