LET'S TAKE A HIKE DOWN
THE PATH TO THE CREEK AND BEYOND

In contrast to the quaint coziness of a backyard garden and it's feeling of security is the awesome open expanses of the forest wilderness which fills us with a sense of adventure and thrills us with the challenge of it's ruggedness.

I began my married life in just such a garden. My hubby and I spent part of our honeymoon backpacking in the Teton Mountains. Over the years we continue to be drawn to the call-of-the-wild and as our first tent (a canvas model), affectionately known as the Honeymoon Hilton, was replaced with a lighter, more high-tech nylon tent, we have learned that a bare minimum of equipment, but of high quality, is the way to go.

something to keep in mind:
Thornton Wilder once said, "The test of an adventure is that when you're in the middle of it, you say to yourself, "Oh, now I've got myself into an awful mess; I wish I were sitting quietly at home." And the sign that something's wrong with you is when you sit quietly at home wishing you were out having lots of adventure."

And most important keep in mind while in the wilderness, take only photos and leave only footprints.

So..... here are some of my favorite trails. The photos are mine....the web links at the bottom of each page will tell you more if you are curious.

The Teton Mountains of Western Wyoming (Paint Brush Canyon)
The Teton Mountains ... another trip in summer of 2000 (Leigh Lake)
The Teton Mountains ... another trip in August of 2002 (Bear Paw Lake)
The Teton Mountains ... another trip in August of 2003 (Bear Paw Lake)

The Teton Mountains ... another trip in August of 2004
Yellowstone ... August of 2003 a drive through the park
The Smokey Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee
Mt.Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina
Appalachian Trail in N. Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest
Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (July, 2001)

.....and don't be afraid to take the little ones along ..... just walk slower and take shorter, flatter trails ..... they will love it and grow up to feel more at-home in the wilderness.

Our youngest on a trip at age 2.
