BUTTERFLIES ARE
"Look at her!" said Giraffe,
as he stood with his friends watching Butterfly flutter
from flower to flower in the garden. "She flies so easily.....she
seems so free!" said Cow. And they watched in awe
and a little envious, wishing they too could have such freedom.
"But
we are free," offered Hippo, "we live in a free country
and the constitution says we are free, so we are....aren't
we?
"Do you feel free?"
asked Mouse, "cause I don't." And they all nodded sadly
in agreement. Then little Mouse shyly stepped forward
and gathering up her courage she asked Butterfly, "We
are all supposed to be free but we don't feel very free,
so why do you look as though you really are free?
"I am free because my Heavenly
Father has set me free. He did that when I became a Christian,"
Butterfly said with a smile.
"Horse-feathers!"
said Giraffe, "how can Christians be free with all those
rules and thou-shalt-nots hanging over their heads? I don't
want nobody telling me what's right and what's wrong. If
it feels good, do it....as I always say!"
"Well let me see
if I can explain this......," said Butterfly. God in His
infinite wisdom created us all with free will. We can choose
to think and act as we please. But at the same time, He
set moral and ethical guidelines, and because we have a
soul, we will always feel a twinge of guilt or a pang of
remorse if we ignore those guidelines. Something deep down
will be telling us that we have done something wrong....that
is our conscious speaking. And if we listen to our conscious
we will begin to feel guilty and maybe even a little sad.
We can ignore our conscious, but a day will come when all
those immoral acts or lack of ethics will cause pain to
us or someone we love. Guilt is a heavy burden, my friends,
and no one can feel really free with a big load of guilt."
"Hmmm," said Cow,
remembering how she had been feeling all day after the "incident"
with her neighbor. What's a little guilt, it's just one
of those things you have to live with, I'll get over it!"
"Well," replied
Butterfly, "what if there was a way to be free of the guilt
and the nagging feeling that you are not as good as you
want to be?"
"No way!" squeaked
Mouse. "Are you telling us there is a way to be free of
guilt?"
"That is just
what I am saying," replied Butterfly. You see, when Jesus
died He paid the price of atonement for all our guilt and
Christians know this. It is the truth that sets us free."
And seeing Mouse trying to hide a snicker, Butterfly continued,
"Hard to believe, isn't it? But it is true....it is indeed
what makes me free.....try it, you might like yourself
more." And with that she flew on about her happy journey
in the garden.
