My book was black, so I left it the original color. I made a dry-embossed metal piece and fastened it on with star brads, added a little metal dragonfly-brad and a couple of stick-on metal bugs. When the book became so thick that the spine was stressed, I split the spine vertically down the middle and hot-glued on a checked upholstry fabric section to make it widder, trimmed it with silver braid, then added a chain with a collection of charms (things with wings, of course).
